Fashion Icon – Coco Chanel

No doubts, there are a lot of talented, perspective and even genius designers. But she was the first one who created a new style, invented a new fashion industry, violated the rules and can be treated as a decent example to follow.

Chanel clothes

I am talking about Coco Chanel. Nowadays, it is enough to write her name everywhere you want in order to sale everything starting from tights or hairclips. Now, Karl Lagerfeld is in charge of her fashion house and one suit from Chanel costs more than 5,000 dollars. And the cost is not because a prestigious and famous name but first of all, because buying Chanel – you can be sure – your clothes will serve a long period of time – they areCoco-chanel mostly hand-made and look gorgeous, elegant and trendy.

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883-1971). For she is a fashion idol! When I hear her name, to my mind comes a picture of attractive young woman in black suit with a string of pearls and in this wear she made a revolution in world’s fashion! She created not only fashionable and immortal suits, ageless “little black dress” (that was introduced in 1926) and perfume Channel № 5, she made women believe that they can live their own lives, they can be independent and wear clothes according to their own preferences.

She left misery of her life and decided to conquer the world. And she did it! She opened her first shop in 1912 and explained to women that they can wear comfortable and at the same time elegant things, like: perfectly tailored suits and dresses, accessories, hats, she introduced jersey and short skirts in a common use, perfume and, of course, trousers, that used to be exclusively men’s privilege. As a rule, Coco was wearing manlike clothes and had a boyish look. In 1922 she introduced her own fragrance Chanel № 5, since than her name became a common one! Chanel-logo

Coco Chanel is a legend, her fame is immortal!

Her quotation:

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”

Appearance of her nickname!

When she was only twenty years old, she sung songs in one cabaret and the most popular song was called Qui a vu Coco dans le Trocadero (Who saw Coco at the Trocadero?). People really liked it and they cried Coco! Coco! And it became her nickname. Actually, she didn’t like it but, she could do nothing.

I think Coco Chanel was much more than a fashion icon. She was the first most successful woman entrepreneur of the 20th century. Furthermore Chanel is still a wonderful role model for many women who want to be successful and elegant.

According to the people who knew her, Chanel genius lay in her ability to pay much attention to details, both in her designs and in business. She had successfully learnt one of the most important component of success: finding people who could provide the necessary skills for her business, and getting the best out of them. Chanel exploited nearly every possibility available to her: the war shortages which may have led her to her investment in jersey, her famous and influential friends, and even the economic situation which drew the society to the resorts of Deauville and Biarritz, where she opened her boutiques – the decision that made her internationally famous.

You can find some information about biography of Coco Chanel, Coco Chanel Little Black Dress, the history of her famous perfume and the story of her famous handbag in

I do not think Chanel was an open-minded person in a modern sense of the word. She had very strong views about dressing a woman and elegance. For example, she found short skirts ridiculous. As far as naked women in ads are concerned, I think she would never allow using her name in this manner.

As an aspiring designer, I think she’s truely inspiring, everything about Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel is inspiring, her life was her inspiration. I don’t see that an opinion is needed if you do not like her, I am unsure why you have a reason not to like her, and I don’t really think you would have known her personally. So I would like to no, why.. don’t you like her.
